Synopsis
Aldo Vianello’s Time of a Flower, a selection from his first two Italian collections in translations by Richard Burns, was Anvil Press’s first title in 1968. It sold out quickly and was praised for the lyrical purity, imagistic concentration and resonance of language – finely mirrored in Richard Burns’s translations – which gave his poems their haunting tone. Anvil decided to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a new, bilingual collection by Vianello, drawing on that book and supplemented with translations of poems from his many succeeding volumes. Aldo Vianello was born in 1937 in Pellestrina, a fishing village in the Venetian lagoon. He has continued to live and write in Venice. He has published more than twenty books of prose and poetry, extending his range without losing the delicate lyrical quality which is the hallmark of his style. Ezra Pound wrote: ‘Mi piace l’onestà della sua poesia, che riflette un’anima. Anch’io amo Venezia, le auguro felicità.’ (I like the honesty of your poetry, which reflects a spirit. I too love Venice, I wish him happiness.’) "Vianello's is a distinctive and rewarding poetic sensibility - Anvil are to be congratulated on the production of this retrospective of his work." Glyn Pursglove, Acumen "... particularly for those fond of lyricism combined with epigrammatic brevity this is a delightful collection." Belinda Cooke, Modern Poetry in Translation Richard Burns is a distinguished poet who lived in Venice from 1964-6. He is the author of many books of poetry and lives in Cambridge.
